Chettinad carved wooden coconut grater

A large version of a typical coconut scraper from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu. The base has been meticulously carved with mythical creatures on a reclaimed seasoned teak wood.

Many Chettiar traditional home products that have heavy ornamentation are a reflection of the wealth and prestige of the Chettiar traders in the olden times

The coconut is grated by scraping the flesh of against the spiked metal head of the scraper, and collected in the circular depression . The flat portion is  used to balance the weight with the other hand or a knee. This one however comes without the blade.
