Product Description
14"x 9" Rectangular Kalighat Themed Wall Decor Plate painted in Kalighat style, in different variants.
Kalighat painting is a traditional art form west Bengal. It emerged in 19th-century Kolkata, under the British rule. The Kalighat Temple in southern Kolkata drew large numbers of devotees and European visitors, prompting craftsmen and artisans from nearby villages to migrate there in search of work.
These artists, originally painters of scrolls or Pattachitra, began creating a new style of painting that was minimalistic. The work usually features one or two figures & bold outlines. This evolution gave rise to what is now known as the Kalighat style of painting.
In recent years, the artworks have taken on a more light-hearted, humorous character, frequently portraying couples in candid and intimate scenes
The male figure, or babu moshai, is usually shown hopelessly smitten — the classic, comically henpecked husband doing anything to keep her happy.
Being hand painted, this product is unique in itself, and its tiny imperfections are what make it special.
Comes with a hook at the back to hang on walls.
